Mobolaji Johnson

In 1967, Mobolaji Johnson was appointed as the first military administrator of Lagos State when the state was carved out of the former Western Region. Johnson, a naval officer, took charge of governing Nigeria's commercial capital during a period of significant administrative restructuring. His appointment came as part of the military government's broader effort to create new states and establish clearer administrative boundaries across the federation.

The creation of Lagos State emerged from growing demands for administrative efficiency and the need to manage Nigeria's rapidly expanding commercial hub separately from the Western Region. Lagos had unique challenges as both the federal capital and the country's economic center, requiring specialized governance structures. The military leadership under General Yakubu Gowon recognized that Lagos needed dedicated administrative attention to handle its complex urban, commercial, and political dynamics effectively.
