What happened
In January 1992, Ogbonnaya Onu took office as the first civilian Governor of Abia State, representing the National Republican Convention (NRC) during Nigeria's Third Republic experiment. His governorship marked Abia's transition from military administration to democratic governance, as the newly created state—carved from Imo State in 1991—began establishing its own political identity. Onu's administration lasted until November 1993, when General Sani Abacha's military coup terminated the Third Republic.
Onu's emergence reflected the broader political realignment of the early 1990s, when General Ibrahim Babangida's transition program created two artificial political parties—the NRC and Social Democratic Party (SDP)—to manage Nigeria's return to civilian rule. As an engineer and academic, Onu represented the technocratic leadership that many hoped would modernize Nigeria's governance. His election in Abia occurred during a period of intense political competition, as the Southeast sought to reassert its influence in national politics following years of marginalization after the civil war.
