What happened
After Afonja called on Muslim allies to support his revolt against Oyo, he grew wary of the Fulani and ordered them out of Ilorin. The Fulani under Abd al-Salam revolted, killed Afonja in 1823, and incorporated Ilorin into the Sokoto Caliphate, with Abd al-Salam as its first emir.
