What happened

In 1846 Bonny went to war against the Andoni people, a conflict rooted in competition for trade routes and markets in the eastern Delta. The Andoni had acted as suppliers of slaves to Bonny during the slave-trade era; the shift to legitimate commerce and the internal conflicts within Bonny weakened the city-state's ability to enforce its commercial dominance. A treaty between King Pepple of Bonny and the chiefs of Andony was eventually concluded (reproduced as Appendix B of Dike's book).
