What happened

On 30 June 1849 John Beecroft was appointed British Consul for the Bights of Benin and Biafra—the first such appointment, marking the formal establishment of British consular authority over the Niger Delta region. Beecroft had been Governor of Fernando Po and had extensive personal knowledge of Delta politics. His appointment transformed British engagement from ad hoc naval intervention to systematic diplomatic and coercive governance.
