What happened

Consul John Beecroft negotiated a treaty in 1850 with King Eyo II of Creek Town and Archibong I of Duke Town banning human sacrifice and the killing of twins, both practices among the Efik. When Old Town sacrificed slaves in 1855, Beecroft bombarded the town and forced its king to sign a similar treaty before rebuilding.
