In 1869 Anna Pepple House and Manilla Pepple House went to war in Bonny, after which Ja Ja evacuated the town and founded his own state upriver at Opobo. By 1872 he had won the war, and by depriving Bonny middlemen of hinterland palm oil he made Opobo a leading export port; the British officially recognized Opobo in 1873.
