What happened

After Sokoto fell on March 15, 1903, Caliph Attahiru fled, but Lugard's forces pursued him and killed him on July 27 at the Second Battle of Burmi, some 200 miles southeast of Kano. Many prominent caliphate citizens then fled east rather than submit to non-Islamic rule.
