Death of King Opubu (Pepple) of Bonny; his son succeeds

Around 1830 the powerful King Opubu of Bonny died. Opubu had built Bonny into the dominant slave-trading port of the Bight of Biafra. His death inaugurated a succession struggle as his heir was young and the great trading Houses sought to consolidate their own power. The period after Opubu's death saw growing tensions between the monarchy and the ex-slave merchant class.
