What happened

In Calabar, the Efik secret society Ekpe, composed of elite men enriched by the slave trade, became the legal backbone of the town in the seventeenth century, setting laws, resolving disputes, and imposing economic and physical sanctions. By the early eighteenth century Ekpe had spread into the hinterland as the legal basis of interior trade.
