What happened

The tradition of seeking Ife's sanction for Benin succession was re-enacted in 1916 when Aguobasimi became Oba of Benin as Eweka II, after the death of the deposed Ovonramwen. The Yoruba kingly inheritance custom likewise persisted: at the Oni's accession (Adesoji Aderemi, throne 1930) and the 1945 Ibadan–Oyo dispute, a deceased Alafin's clothes were sent to principal Obas including the Alake, Oni, Owa and Oba of Benin.
