French occupation of Bussa threatens the Niger

In 1897 the French occupied Bussa on the Niger, very near the Royal Niger Company's treaty zone, after earlier occupying Fort D'Arenberg in Borgu in 1894 and sending a gunboat up the Niger. From Bussa, France could build the strength to challenge company jurisdiction over the river.
