What happened

In 1954 the Ife Museum was opened, followed by the Nigerian Museum in Lagos in 1957. Subsequently museums were established at Oron, Kano, Owo, Benin, Nri, Kaduna and Argungu. The Ife Museum was established to house and display the remarkable terracotta and bronze sculptures associated with the ancient holy city of the Yoruba.
