What happened

Excluded from trading on the Niger and facing starvation under company monopoly, Brass forces under King Koko attacked the Royal Niger Company headquarters at Akassa on December 29, 1894, destroying warehouses and machinery and seizing property. British opinion largely blamed the company's cut-throat practices for provoking the revolt.
