What happened

A present delivered in the name of King Manuel of Portugal in 1505 to the Oba of Benin consisted of a caparisoned horse, a necklace of Indian beads, a piece of printed chintz from Cambay, a marlota of orange taffeta and white satin, six linen shirts, and a shirt of blue Indian silk. This gift helped establish the convention in Benin that only the Oba might wear silk. Three palace officials principally concerned with European trade also received presents, limited to linen shirts.
