Around 1717–18 the King of Hueda, controlling Whydah, forbade hinterland traders from selling slaves on the coast, forcing them to sell to a royal agent; the King of Allada reserved the purchase of firearms and cowries as his sole right. These moves sought to monopolize trade with Europeans against hinterland states such as Oyo and Dahomey.
