Macgregor Laird launches the first steamer business on the Niger

In 1857 Macgregor Laird established the first steamer business on the Niger. Although it ultimately failed amid competition and violent opposition from coastal firms and their middlemen, it proved that interior river trade could be profitable if competition were limited.
