What happened

After the inauguration of the Nigerian Antiquities Service in July 1943, Murray was appointed Surveyor of Antiquities. Kenneth Murray had been appointed to the Nigerian Education Department in 1927 to advise on the impact of European education on African art. The idea of conservation of traditional works of art had first been conceived in 1933 by E. H. Duckworth, a former editor of Nigeria Magazine.
