What happened
In 1902 Obong Eyo Honesty VIII of Creek Town sent in the names of four people whom he said he had appointed to replace some deceased members of the Native Council. In the same year the 'sub-chiefs' of Henshaw Town, Calabar, protested to the District Commissioner against the selection by their leader, Chief Ekang Henshaw, of persons they did not approve of to represent their town. These examples show that along the coast, where established chiefs existed, the selection process involved recognised indigenous leaders but was still contested and irregular.
