British conquest of Sokoto and Kano

British forces defeated the Sokoto Caliphate's central political authority and incorporated the emirates into Northern Nigeria. The British then relied heavily on emirate structures, making indirect rule central to northern administration and later debates over authority, religion, and citizenship.
