What happened

With the army weakened after Abiodun's purge, outlying provinces declared independence: the Bariba part under Oyo in 1783, then Egba, then the Tapa (Nupe) in 1791, with the coastal dependencies in constant revolt in the last two decades of the 18th century. Awole's army suffered a crushing defeat by the Bariba in 1791, sealing off the slave supply that had become a key export.
