Reign of Alafin Oluewu; battle of Igbodo; fall of Oyo Ile

Alafin Oluewu came to the throne c. 1833–4 and died in the campaign against Ilorin. A combination of evidence recorded by Samuel Crowther in 1841 (reporting that the battle of Igbodo had occurred seven years earlier, i.e. c. 1834) and Johnson's narrative indicates that Oluewu's death and the abandonment of Oyo Ile should be dated to the dry season of 1835–6. Burton (1860s) gave the date as 1835; Gwandu Arabic sources give 1837; Law adopts 1835–6 as the best estimate.
