What happened

After 3000 BC the Sahara entered its final phase of desiccation, bringing it to its present desert state. This process had been underway since about 5500 BC, when the lakes in the southern Sahara began becoming progressively more saline. The drying of the Sahara pushed pastoral peoples southward and intensified pressure on wild food resources in the sahel.
