What happened

A contemporary source (a British trading company despatch dated October 1754) reports: "The King of Io is dead, and they are wrangling and fighting who shall have the throne. Two that have been seated on it within these two months are both killed." Law identifies these two kings as Alafin Labisi, who reigned seventeen days, and Alafin Awonbioju, who reigned 130 days. Their removal is associated with the seizure of effective power by Basorun Gaha, holder of the principal office in Oyo after that of the Alafin.
