What happened

Duke Town is said to have won its final victory over Old Town in the contest for the Cross River overseas trade in 1767, with the connivance of English ships' captains: while Old Town leaders waited aboard for a peace meeting, Duke Town warriors (backed by Eyo Honesty of Creek Town) attacked. Thereafter Duke Town's primacy in the slave trade was virtually unchallenged.
