Second civilian Governor of Nasarawa State (PDP, 1999–2007). Founded Nasarawa State University, Keffi (2001). In 2010, the EFCC arraigned him on a 149-count charge alleging ₦15bn fraud involving 18 officials and contractors; Justice A. A. Okeke of the Federal High Court, Lafia struck out the case on 28 June 2016 (ruling FHC/LF/CR/08/2010) on a motion challenging federal jurisdiction over state funds. Later Senator for Nasarawa West from 2011 (defected from PDP to APC), and unanimously elected APC National Chairman in March 2022; he led the party to victory in the 2023 presidential election and voluntarily resigned on 16 July 2023.
