Abdullahi Shelleng
Major General (rtd.) Abdullahi Shelleng (b. 20 January 1942, Shelleng, Numan LGA, Adamawa State) was the inaugural Military Governor of Benue State, appointed by General Murtala Mohammed on 3 February 1976 when the state was newly created from the northern portion of former Benue-Plateau State; served through the transition to General Olusegun Obasanjo's regime following Murtala's assassination in February 1976; left office in July 1978. Foundational figure who built Benue State's administrative and physical infrastructure from scratch — Makurdi residential estates, the State Secretariat, Radio Benue (1977), the Benue State Water Board, the Murtala Mohammed College of Arts, Science and Technology, and the Advanced Teachers' College, Katsina-Ala. Reputational criticisms include the demolition of the inherited mini Makurdi Stadium (criticised as wasteful) and perceptions of external imposition as a Northern appointee in a predominantly Christian Middle Belt state. No corruption case in the corpus. Recommend `contextual` status.
