Senator Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim
Senator Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim (c.1950 - 4 February 2024) was a long-serving Nigerian politician from Yobe State whose career spanned the Third and Fourth Republics. He was the first civilian governor of Yobe State, originally elected in December 1991 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and serving from January 1992 until General Sani Abacha's military takeover in November 1993. Following Nigeria's return to democracy, he was re-elected governor in 1999 under the All People's Party (APP, later renamed ANPP), winning a second term in 2003 and serving until May 2007. He then represented Yobe East Senatorial District in the National Assembly for three consecutive terms (2007-2019), moving with the merger from ANPP into the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 elections. As governor, he was a prominent figure in the northern Sharia movement, formally introducing Sharia criminal law in Yobe in 2000. His record is shadowed by several controversies but, importantly, no criminal conviction. In September 2005, EFCC operatives descended on Damaturu to investigate a petition alleging diversion of state funds and unexecuted projects; Ibrahim publicly dismissed the petition as PDP-sponsored political mischief, telling allAfrica that the allegations were 'some of the lousiest' he had seen and that several allegedly unexecuted projects had in fact been commissioned by President Obasanjo himself. The probe did not result in charges, and contemporary commentary in 2017 noted that he remained the only former governor in the Senate without an open case at the EFCC, ICPC, or Code of Conduct Tribunal. In July 2017 a video showing him in a hotel room with two women surfaced; he confirmed his identity to Premium Times and Vanguard, framed the release as a failed blackmail attempt, and refused to apologise, calling it a private matter - the episode drew widespread criticism given his role in introducing Sharia. He lost the 2019 APC senatorial primary to former governor Ibrahim Gaidam and retired from elective politics. He died on 4 February 2024 at age 73 while undergoing medical treatment in Saudi Arabia and was buried in Madinah. Tributes were paid by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni and Jigawa Governor Umar Namadi. Status is recorded as 'alleged' on the strength of the 2005 EFCC probe and the 2017 conduct scandal; the previous 'convicted' tag in the corpus was a misclassification of his obituary coverage and is corrected here.
