George Akume
Senator George Akume (b. 27 December 1953, Gboko) is a Nigerian civil servant and politician. He started his career as a Land Officer with the Benue State Ministry of Lands and Survey before entering politics; elected Governor of Benue State on the PDP platform in 1999 (re-elected 2003) and served two terms until 2007 with a rural-development and education focus in the "Food Basket of the Nation." Subsequently Senator for Benue North-West (2007, 2011, 2015) and Senate Minority Leader; defected from PDP to APC; appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation by President Bola Tinubu in 2023 (folder index.md predates the SGF appointment and shows "Minister of Special Duties"). In November 2021, the Samuel Ortom administration (his successor) wrote to the EFCC, ICPC and IGP citing a Benue State audit and alleging he embezzled approximately ₦4.6 billion in state funds during his 1999–2007 governorship (TheCable, ThisDay, FIJ — November 2021). Akume publicly denied the allegations in February 2022 (Vanguard), asserting he had never been invited for questioning by any anti-corruption agency in over 23 years in public office. No EFCC charge has been filed; the petitions remain at the agency-receipt stage. Earlier, in 2006, then-EFCC Chairman Nuhu Ribadu testified before the Senate listing five "most corrupt" governors of the 1999–2003 cohort and reportedly named Akume among them (corroborating Threads/Facebook references; the substantive event is real but the JSON's social-media sources are non-credible — primary Vanguard/ThisDay coverage is the canonical citation). Recommend `alleged` status for the corruption archive, with the editorial note that this is a politically inflected PDP-successor-vs-PDP-predecessor petition matter that subsequently became APC-vs-APC after Akume's defection.
