Under investigation

Isa Yuguda

Mallam Isa Yuguda (b. 15 June 1956) is a Nigerian banker, economist, and politician who served as Governor of Bauchi State on the ANPP (then PDP after defection) platform from 29 May 2007 to 29 May 2015. He trained as an economist and banker, rising to become Managing Director of Inland Bank, NAL Merchant Bank, and other Nigerian banks; he served as Minister of State for Transport and Aviation under President Olusegun Obasanjo before contesting for the Bauchi governorship in 2007. He is the son-in-law of the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (m. Nafisa Yar'Adua). His administration was billed as bringing banker-corporate financial discipline to state finances, but multiple post-handover allegations of maladministration emerged. **The substantive corruption matters:** (i) the EFCC opened an investigation in October 2016 (SaharaReporters reported on 23 October 2016); in February 2017 the EFCC obtained an interim court-order forfeiture of his multi-million-naira property at Plot 184 Attahiru Bafarawa Close, beside Fariah Suites, old GRA, Bauchi, pending final determination of the investigation (Daily Trust corroborates the agency's seizure of his property); (ii) in early 2017 the Bauchi State Government (under Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar's APC administration) filed complaints with both EFCC and ICPC alleging the diversion of ~₦212 billion in Bauchi-State funds during Yuguda's tenure (Punch); (iii) the ICPC separately charged Yuguda's former Personal Assistant Sanusi Mohammed Isa on a 36-count corruption charge and seized 220 flats across 20 estates in 2017, with the PA subsequently acquitted by the Bauchi State High Court in December 2022 and the ICPC publicly announcing intent to appeal. **No formal personal arraignment of Yuguda himself has been recorded in the corpus** — the agency activity against him has not progressed past interim-forfeiture / investigation stage.
