Yemi Osinbajo

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, is a Nigerian lawyer, law professor and former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023) under President Muhammadu Buhari. Earlier in his career he served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State (1999-2007) under Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where he is credited with reforming the state judiciary, prosecuting high-profile cases, and developing a body of administration-of-justice legislation that later became a national template. As Vice President he chaired the National Economic Council (NEC), the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19's policy coordination arm at cabinet level, and the governing board of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). He served as Acting President of Nigeria during two extended medical absences of President Buhari in 2017 (January-March and May-August), and his stewardship in that period was generally praised across partisan lines, notably for decisive action against rogue elements in the Department of State Services (DSS) following the 2018 siege of the National Assembly and for the rapid roll-out of the social investment programmes (N-Power, TraderMoni, MarketMoni, Conditional Cash Transfers). Osinbajo's archive presence is for network legibility as a former Vice President, ex-AG of Lagos and 2023 APC presidential contender, rather than for any substantive verified corruption matter. The principal public controversies attached to his name during his VP tenure -- the 2018 NEMA N5.8 billion North-East intervention/Niger Delta contract dispute, the 2019 'N90 billion FIRS election funding' allegation by APC ex-deputy spokesperson Timi Frank, and the 2020 'N4 billion from Ibrahim Magu' claim circulated by Pointblank News publisher Jackson Ude -- were all publicly denied, formally rebutted by the agencies named (FIRS, EFCC counsel), retracted by at least one mainstream outlet (Vanguard apologised in 2019), and never proceeded to charge, arraignment or indictment. Osinbajo himself said in 2023 that he had drafted a letter requesting the EFCC to investigate the allegations against him to clear his name, but that President Buhari personally dissuaded him from sending it. No EFCC, ICPC or court file is publicly known to be open against him. He remains active as a Senior Advocate, public commentator and chair of the ACF-backed continental Africa Carbon Markets Initiative steering committee, and is widely regarded as one of the cleaner figures of the Buhari administration.
