Abba Kabir Yusuf
Governor of Kano State, Kano · NNPP
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's record through June 2026 reflects a mixed performance: substantive wins on education funding and IGR growth sit alongside a demolitions controversy that generated court-ordered compensation running into tens of billions of naira, an unresolved N6.5 billion probe into a protocol aide, and a security situation that required personal presidential briefings. On promises, the headline commitment to free and compulsory education has been materially advanced -- the 2024 budget allocated approximately N130 billion (29.95 percent of N437 billion) to education, WAEC fees were made free for indigent candidates, and 1,200 schools were reported renovated. The reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in May 2024 -- which had been a Kwankwasiyya movement political objective -- was completed by legislation. On governance, Kano's IGR doubled from N37.38 billion in 2023 to N74.77 billion in 2024, and two successive budgets were passed (N437 billion for 2024; N549 billion proposed for 2025). Infrastructure delivery is ongoing but the flagship N27 billion Dan'agundi and Tal'udu interchange flyovers, launched in 2023, remained incomplete through mid-2026. On integrity, no criminal conviction or arraignment has been recorded against the governor personally. However, his administration's demolition programme drew court injunctions, an N8.5 billion damages award over the Daula Hotel demolition, and an N30 billion compensation order over Kofar Mata structures. ICPC and EFCC investigations into an alleged N6.5 billion diversion traced to his Director General of Protocol remained live as of mid-2026, with the Kano State Government denying the allegations. Yusuf's January 2026 defection from NNPP -- the party on whose platform he was elected -- to the APC, while legally permissible given no applicable recall mechanism, represents a material break with his electoral mandate.
This grade rates performance in office, not any person’s guilt. Criminal matters appear above only as their court status. How we grade.
