Senator Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir served Sokoto East for three consecutive terms (2011-2023), rising to Senate Majority Leader in the final year of the 9th Assembly. His legislative record includes sponsorship of constituency-linked bills -- notably the Federal University of Technology Sabon Birni (Establishment) Bill and the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria (Repeal and Enactment) Bill -- and sequential committee chairmanships including National Security and Intelligence (9th Assembly) and Senate Services (8th Assembly). His security advocacy was among the more documented aspects of his tenure: he publicly condemned banditry in Sokoto East repeatedly and called for military and police reinforcements in a constituency that suffered acute armed-bandit violence in Sabon Birni and Goronyo local government areas. The constituency axis is weakened by a reported ICPC tracking finding in December 2024 that two ambulances from a health-clinic constituency project were diverted from their stated destination; ICPC returned the vehicles to Hajia Rakiya Maternity Hospital in Sabon Birni, and no criminal prosecution has been reported. Gobir contested and lost the APC Sokoto governorship primary in May 2022 -- scoring 36 of 1,182 votes against Ahmad Aliyu's 1,080 -- and then stepped down from the senatorial seat to pursue that failed bid, leaving Sokoto East for a new senator from the 10th Assembly. He was appointed Northwest Representative on the NDDC governing board by President Tinubu in August 2023. The party-defection record (PDP to APC in January 2014) and post-senate NDDC appointment are noted but do not materially alter the overall assessment.
