Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko
Senator, Sokoto North (Senatorial) · APC
Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has served Sokoto North continuously since 2015 and is now in his third Senate term, making him one of the longest-serving politicians in the North-West. His governorship record (2007-2015) includes the establishment of Sokoto State University (2009) and a declared emergency on education. In the 10th Senate he chairs the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, through which he presented the committee report recommending approval of President Tinubu's $21.5 billion external borrowing plan in July 2025; in the 9th Senate he chaired the Committee on Defence. His constituency delivery record consists largely of empowerment distributions -- motorcycles, tricycles, food items -- with some documented education infrastructure, but published criticism in Leadership and Daily Trust in 2024 characterised nine years of Senate representation as below the needs of the district. On legislative output, the most documented bill attributed to him is SB.406, the Federal Polytechnic Silame (Establishment) Bill, passed by the Senate in the 8th Assembly. On integrity, Wamakko has faced a persistent but unresolved EFCC investigation since 2015 relating to alleged theft and money laundering of N15 billion during his governorship; no formal charges have been filed and no arraignment has occurred. His appointment as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes Committee in August 2019 while under that probe drew public criticism for apparent conflict of interest. An additional allegation emerged in November 2025 when civil society petitioned police over statements attributed to Wamakko concerning sectarian violence against the Shia minority during his tenure as governor; no charge has been filed. His overall record is mixed: notable committee leadership and one confirmed Senate bill, offset by thin independent verification of constituency delivery and unresolved governance-era allegations.
