Senator David Jimkuta has served Taraba South since June 2023, having defeated incumbent Governor Darius Ishaku in one of the prominent upsets of the 2023 general elections. His first term is marked by a visible constituency empowerment record anchored on the March 2025 STEP (Southern Taraba Empowerment Programme) distribution of items reportedly worth over 2 billion naira, sustained security advocacy including a December 2023 call for a state of emergency in Takum and Ussa LGAs following reported mass killings, and intervention requests on the abandoned N57 billion Ibi Bridge. On the legislative side, he chairs two Senate committees (FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters; Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation) and has sponsored at least three bills: the Federal University Wukari Bill (2024), the Nigeria Tea Development Authority Bill (2023), and the Federal College of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Ibi) Bill.
