Engineer Abdullahi Sule
Governor of Nasarawa State, Nasarawa · APC
Engineer Abdullahi Sule took office in May 2019 with an industrialisation agenda grounded in Nasarawa's natural endowments: solid minerals, agricultural land, a central location, and a trainable labour force. Over two terms his administration produced measurable gains. The Avatar New Energy Materials lithium processing plant commissioned in May 2024 was the first of its kind in Nigeria, and cumulative lithium-sector investment in the state exceeded $850 million by October 2025, drawing Ganfeng, Canmax, and Jiu Ling alongside Avatar. IGR grew from roughly N7.7 billion in 2019 to an estimated N52 billion for full-year 2025, a genuine improvement in revenue administration, though the state remains heavily dependent on Federation Account transfers. Over 639 km of roads were constructed or rehabilitated across the three senatorial zones; major urban infrastructure projects including the Lafia flyover and underpass (commissioned by President Tinubu) and the Akwanga underpass advanced significantly. The state government farmed 10,000 hectares of rice at Jangwa, Awe LGA, commencing harvest in October 2024. On the negative side, a worsening security crisis dominated 2025: the Nasarawa State House of Assembly declared the state no longer safe in November 2025, and cross-border accusations linked armed herdsmen in Nasarawa to attacks in Benue. The governor's responses -- banning ethnic vigilante groups by Executive Order No. 1 of 2024, ordering profiling of new residents, and convening emergency security councils -- have not visibly reversed the trend. The election petition cycle of 2023 to 2024 produced a civil-society allegation that state funds were being used for litigation; the governor denied this and the allegation remains unresolved. No formal corruption charges have been filed against the governor. Sule's record is strongest on economic diversification and mineral-sector investment and weakest on security delivery and the persistent gap between budget ambition and independent verification of project completion.
