Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi entered the Senate in June 2019 on the PDP platform, having served three consecutive terms in the House of Representatives (2011-2019) representing Owerri Municipal/North/West Federal Constituency. He won re-election to the 10th Senate in February 2023 on the Labour Party ticket, polling 100,631 votes against the PDP's 87,229, after losing the PDP primary to Uche Onyeagucha. A tribunal petition by Onyeagucha was dismissed in September 2023. In July 2024, barely 13 months into his second Senate term, Onyewuchi defected on the Senate floor from Labour Party to APC, citing internal LP divisions; Labour Party publicly demanded his seat be declared vacant but no vacancy declaration or court order followed. In the 9th Senate he served as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on State and Local Government and sponsored the Older Persons (Rights and Privileges) Bill (2019) and the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Bill (2021), the latter proposing 15-year imprisonment for ransom payments. In the 10th Senate he chairs the Senate Committee on NASENI and sponsored the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri (Establishment) Bill, which passed second reading in October 2024. Constituency-level activity during his tenure includes the commissioning of a 500KVA transformer substation in Ahiazu Mbaise, solar-powered boreholes in Ikeduru communities, and a health insurance programme for the less privileged. His record is substantive across two Senate terms but is qualified by the mid-term party defection and the absence of publicly verifiable, independently monitored project data for the 10th Senate period.
