Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila (Kano South) entered the 10th Senate in June 2023 as an NNPP candidate, ending the sixteen-year reign of APC Senator Kabiru Gaya, and brought with him three terms of House of Representatives experience. His legislative output is visible: he sponsored the Constitution (Alteration) Bill SB.523 for the creation of Tiga State from Kano (first reading July 2024); the Local Government Financial Autonomy Bill, which he credits as a precursor to the July 2024 Supreme Court judgment; and the Federal College of Education (Special) Karaye Establishment Bill (2024). He was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) in October 2024 following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, and his committee announced a comprehensive strategic investigative hearing on the downstream sector for Q4 2025 to Q4 2026. On constituency delivery, documented interventions include a N153 million nursing scholarship for 100 constituents (August 2023), distribution of over 3,000 school chairs and 1,000 hospital beds, and facilitation of a N90–N96 billion ecological and irrigation package for Kano South dams and the Tiga Bridge, though at the time of compilation several of these projects remained at award or mobilisation stage rather than completion. A significant integrity concern is his defection from NNPP to APC in April–May 2025, just under two years into a mandate won on the NNPP platform, invoking Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution on grounds of NNPP's internal crisis. NNPP Kano State chapter had earlier suspended him in February 2025 for associating with APC leaders at personal functions. Senate leadership publicly alleged in June 2026 that his committee chairmanship and a N90 billion ecological contract were presidential inducements, an allegation he denied. No charge or court finding against him has been established. Overall, an active senator with measurable legislative and constituency outputs, but with a party-switching record that undermines mandate accountability and unanswered questions about the link between federal project awards and his defection.
