Michael Opeyemi Bamidele

Senator (Senate Leader / Majority Leader, 10th Senate), Ekiti Central (Senatorial) · APC

Assessment Profile06

Michael Opeyemi Bamidele has served as Senate Leader of the 10th National Assembly since July 2023, coordinating the APC legislative agenda across a chamber of 109 senators. His legislative footprint is the most visible among senators: he led the floor debate on the four Tax Reform Bills signed into law in June 2025, sponsored at least 17 bills in the first year of the 10th Senate (placing him among the top three bill-sponsors), chaired the Senate Ad Hoc Committee overseeing emergency rule in Rivers State from May 2025, and anchored the midterm claim that 983 bills were introduced and 108 passed into law between June 2023 and June 2025 — a figure that contradicted Senate President Akpabio's simultaneous count of 96 bills from 844 introduced, attracting documented press criticism. On constituency delivery, demonstrable outputs include a mega empowerment programme reaching over 5,000 Ekiti Central residents in April 2025, the federal establishment of the University of Technology, Environment and Sciences at Iyin Ekiti (assented February 2025), commissioning of roads, mini-stadia, and markets, a free medical outreach across all five LGAs, and six zonal intervention projects valued at N1.472 billion inserted in the 2024 federal budget. His integrity record is cleaner than most of his peers: no EFCC or ICPC case has been found; his party history includes a documented defection from ACN to Labour Party in 2013 to contest the 2014 Ekiti governorship (in which he came third with 5.23% of votes), and a return to APC in 2015. As Senate Leader he publicly acknowledged the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as one of the chamber's lowest moments while simultaneously providing the institutional justification for the suspension. He sponsored a motion in June 2026 that nullified a Senate Public Accounts Committee arrest warrant against former NNPCL MD Mele Kyari during a N210 trillion accountability probe, an action civil society treated as shielding executive-aligned figures from oversight. The overall record is above average for a senator of his tenure: high legislative output in a leadership role, tangible constituency delivery, and an integrity record without active prosecution, offset by transparency concerns in the bill-count discrepancy and the Kyari warrant episode.
