Mohammed Umar Bago
Governor of Niger State, Niger · APC
Mohammed Umar Bago took office on 29 May 2023 styling himself the 'Farmer Governor' and launching a 40-year 'New Niger Agenda' anchored in mechanised agriculture, urban renewal, and security. On promises: agriculture saw early traction, with an initial delivery of 300 tractors in February 2024 from a 1,000-unit John Deere order and a self-reported N600 billion in 2024 agricultural output; roads are under active construction with over 1,283 km cited as under work. On governance: the 2025 budget of N1.558 trillion passed with 87% allocated to capital; the 2024 budget achieved 68.88% performance, and IGR grew 170% in Q1 2024. On delivery, security presents the most damaging gap: banditry remained severe, over 300 schoolchildren and teachers were abducted from a Catholic school in November 2025 (all later released), and the 28 May 2025 Mokwa flood killed at least 151 people while the governor was in Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage. On integrity: Bago ordered the closure of Badegi 90.1 FM in August 2025, oversaw the three-day detention of a journalist in January 2025, and was listed in the International Press Institute's 'Book of Infamy' in December 2025 for repeated press freedom violations. No formal EFCC or ICPC charges against Bago are on public record. The record is mixed: genuine infrastructure momentum and agricultural investment are offset by a persistent security crisis, a catastrophic flood disaster response, and documented media suppression.
No court or anti-graft case on public record in this archive as of compilation. Absence of a record is not a clearance.
This grade rates performance in office, not any person’s guilt. Criminal matters appear above only as their court status. How we grade.
