Senator Umar Shehu Buba (born 2 October 1976, Toro LGA, Bauchi State) won the Bauchi South seat in February 2023 with 175,505 votes and was sworn into the 10th Senate in June 2023. His legislative output is among the more active for a first-term senator: he sponsored the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2024 -- the most consequential of the 19 bills the 10th Senate passed in its first session -- along with bills on the Federal Medical Centre Act, the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital Management Board Act, the National Security Agencies Act, and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) (Amendment) Bill 2025 (SB 910), which seeks to expand the university's mandate to a conventional institution. He was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence but was removed from that post in November 2025, with Senate President Akpabio citing inadequate oversight against rising northern insecurity; he was reassigned to chair the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry. On the constituency side, documented interventions include the commissioning of 40 solar-powered boreholes across all seven LGAs of Bauchi South in January 2026, scholarships for 401 students announced in June 2025, and recurring food and agricultural input distributions. The principal integrity event is his May 2026 defection from APC to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) after withdrawing from the APC Bauchi governorship primary, citing alleged irregularities in the primary. He was subsequently adopted as PRP's gubernatorial candidate. Allegations that he sponsored banditry -- circulated via social-media video in late 2025 -- were denied and are alleged; security agencies arrested five individuals accused of disseminating the material. No court has made any finding against him. The record is mixed: a credible legislative output on security legislation tempered by removal from the security committee, active constituency touches, and a mid-tenure party switch that removes him from the APC bloc under whose platform he was elected.
