What happened

Christopher Alao-Akala, PDP governor of Oyo State 2007–2011 (after taking office in January 2006 when his predecessor Rashidi Ladoja was impeached), was arrested by the EFCC in October 2011 alongside fellow ex-governors Gbenga Daniel (Ogun) and Aliyu Akwe Doma (Nasarawa), as part of a broader $615m embezzlement probe. He was arraigned on 11 counts at the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan over an alleged ₦11.5bn fraud, the bulk of which related to an ₦8.5bn road contract awarded to Pentagon Engineering Services. The trial court discharged and acquitted him; the Court of Appeal upheld that acquittal in 2019. He died in January 2022 with no conviction on his record. Status: `arraigned` (charges struck out / acquitted on appeal — equivalent to `dismissed` for archive-status purposes).
