A caravan reaching Tripoli from Borno in 1638 traded thirty eunuchs, a hundred young captives, fifty maidens, and a golden tortoise, among other goods, for 200 choice horses, fifteen young European renegades, several muskets, and swords. The Tripoli trade had become very lucrative by the mid-seventeenth century.
