What happened

At a meeting of the Bonny Court of Equity in 1853, Consul Beecroft deposed King Pepple, who had long resisted British trade interests and waged war on Elem Kalabari. His successor Dappo was forced to sign a treaty making the court the supreme judicial authority and barring the king from trading or waging war without British approval.
