Cattle pastoralists with pottery and ground stone tools occupied mounds in the sahel; a similar situation obtained at Kursakata by about 1000 BCE and a little later at Daima in north-eastern Nigeria, where cattle-keepers probably grew guinea corn (sorghum) on the fertile clay lands left by the shrunken Lake Chad.
