What happened
A letter from the captain of Príncipe to Carneiro implies that the Oba died late in 1516 or early in 1517, during the campaign he had resumed in October 1516. The only Oba of the period whose death is traditionally associated with war is Ozolua. Benin and Ishan oral histories agree that at the time of his death in the Uromi war Ozolua had become very unpopular, and his war-weary soldiers brought about his death. His successor appears to have been the baptised son, who was still a boy, so effective control passed to the palace chiefs Osodin and Umangue.
