What happened

On 30 May 1517 the vicar of São Tomé, Father Diogo Bello, with three other priests arrived in Príncipe looking for a ship to take them to Benin, declaring they hoped to convert the young Oba. They arranged to sail at the end of August 1517, but whether they did so is not known. Nothing more is heard about the earlier missionaries after Pires' October 1516 letter, suggesting they died or left Benin shortly after the Oba's death. Father Bello's party would not have undertaken the voyage had the earlier mission still been active.
