Denham and Clapperton expedition through Hausaland

The Denham and Clapperton expedition of 1822 travelled through Hausaland and reached the southern shores of Lake Chad, providing the first systematic British geographical information about the interior of what would become northern Nigeria. This expedition demonstrated the potential of an overland route to the Niger but did not resolve the question of the river's outlet.
