What happened
The last remaining rival to Efik dominance, Salt Town (an Ibibio fishing village near Tom Shott Point), was overcome "about 1800 or a little later." By the beginning of the 19th century the Efik had gained control over the whole lower Cross River, its estuary and overseas trade, with Duke Town emerging as leader in close cooperation with Creek Town.
