What happened
In the upper layers of Iwo Eleru rock shelter there occur pieces of sillimanite and ground stone axes made from it; sillimanite is a tough fibrous rock not known to occur within 44 km of Iwo Eleru. The use of this material and the making of ground stone axes may have begun some time after 4000 BC, implying long-distance procurement. Not long after this, pottery decorated by comb-stamping makes its first appearance at the site.
